Simple Wisdom, Massive Change: In Conversation with Bob Proctor

Early this year, I had the incredible honour and pleasure to sit down for a chat with a legendary speaker and author in the personal growth and development space. You've probably seen him in the film, The Secret, and he happens to be one of my personal heroes - Bob Procter.

Though he was on the show primarily to talk about his new book, The Art of Living, we ended up covering a multitude of topics, not the least of course being the factors that influence our success or failure in life.

I've compiled five of the most powerful ideas for creating real change and true success and fulfillment in our lives, but the truth is, Bob shared so much wisdom and knowledge, a few hundred words couldn't possibly capture it all.

I strongly recommend you check out The Inner Changemaker podcast episode to get the full benefit of my discussion with Bob.

For now though, here's a taster. Warning: The contents within may change your life!

1. Our awareness controls our results.

If you're making 100K a year, it's because you're not aware of how to make 100K a month. We accomplish what we're aware of, so in order to improve your results, you must look closely at those results and ask, "Is this what I want?" If that answer is "no," then you must project your imagination into the future by writing down what you want in the present tense. So for example if you want to make 100K a month, write out how grateful you are to be achieving the result you want. Live as if you've already achieved it and magical things will begin happening.

2. Success is the progressive realization of a worthy idea.

One thing we're rarely taught is that as long as you're striving toward an idea, you're succeeding. We often set goals to accomplish only what we're aware of. In other words, we're just duplicating what we've done in the past. If your goals don’t scare the living daylights out of you, you're going in the wrong direction. A goal should scare and excite you simultaneously - it's scary because it's new territory and you have no idea how to reach it, but also exciting because it's what you want. That combination will fuel your imagination to find a way.

3. Forget the how and focus on the what.

We often spend too much time thinking about the "how" of a goal and not enough on what, specifically, we want. Our problem is we get the idea that if I can’t see how to do something, we become convinced that we can’t do it. This is completely wrong. If you can see what you want clearly in your mind, keep working toward it and you can reach it - you’ll achieve whatever it is you truly want. But first, you need to know exactly [what] you want.

4. Slowing down as you get older is a myth.

As you get older, you should be going faster, not slower. All the energy in the universe is here in the present, it’s evenly distributed in all places and all people at the same time. You don’t receive energy, you release energy. Desire is simply the triggering mechanism to release that energy. Bob will be 82 on his next birthday, and he's doing his part to release as much energy into the world as possible, continuing a program began with his partner to build schools in Africa.

5. Your purpose is to do what you love.

Too often we get caught up in the idea that "I'd love to do this but I can't earn any money at it." That doesn't matter at all. There are ways to create multiple sources of income by setting situations where you are providing service. On top of that, if you're doing something you are truly passionate about, you'll be more emotionally engaged with it and squeeze every bit of success possible from it. We should allocate a part of our income and a part of our time to our own personal development - to upgrading ourselves. We're not taught to do that in modern society but it's essential.

As you can imagine, this conversation was a personal high point for me. To be able to speak one-on-one with someone who truly "walks the talk" and brings such brilliant insight, passion and love to everything he does are inspiring and exciting.

Again, this was just a taste of a much larger conversation. I urge you to check out The Inner Changemaker podcast episode to hear the entire thing. And while you're at it, check out Bob's new book,
